To many the most important club in their bag is the driver. It seems that more development has gone into this club than any other and it is the established club carried, but not always used, by most golfers. The design of the driver, with its long shaft, large club head and least amount of loft is to hit the ball the farthest.he driver is often the club that is the most difficult for the amateur to master because of its long shaft and low amount of loft, but with practice it can give an advantage.

Virtually all drivers manufactured today have titanium or carbon composite heads. These are much lighter than the less expensive steel heads and allow manufacturers more scope when determining the size of the head. In all probability the titanium driver has been the major advance in golf technology in recent years.

In contrast, steel headed drivers, are more conventional looking, metallic and heavier which results in a smaller head and smaller sweet spot. They are, however still very resilient and give a solid connection.

When determining what driver is suitable there are some technical terms that are used and are important. These are: –

Moment of Inertia (MOI). A high MOI in a driver means that the club head is more resistant to twisting and will therefore be more constant and forgiving.

Perimeter Weighting. In an effort to support the club on all types of impacts on a club head the weight is redistributed to the heel and toe.

Centre of Gravity (COG): The flight of a golf ball, when using a driver, is determined by the COG. Higher COG produces lower ball flight, with higher ball flight resulting from a lower COG. Most clubs are manufactured with the center of gravity positioned as far back and as low as possible from the clubface to help in gaining height and trajectory.
